I’m in a good mood. Check that, a GREAT mood! (If you don’t know why, you really haven’t been paying attention) The NHL ‘09-‘10 campaign got underway this evening, and the Hawks regular season lid-lifter is tomorrow morning in Finland. This is a fantastic time of year! That said, I came to a relatively important conclusion today on what I consider to be a relevant topic.
Tomorrow morning just after the Hawks kick their season off, the IOC will announce the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympiad. As you should know by now, my home city, Chicago is one of the four finalists, along with Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, and Tokyo. It is also considered a front-runner with Rio of those four. This has been germinating for some time now, and up until today, I’ve been vacillating on whether or not I was in favor of this proposal. But today, I made up my mind.
I want these games.
Living in the South Loop, the IOC’s decision will affect my life dramatically in many ways. Taxes, construction, property and housing value, are just a few. There are a lot of people who make really good arguments on both side of this issue taking all of those points into account, and maybe that’s why I had so much trouble picking a side. But when all is said and done, I want these games.
Yes, the traffic, the construction, the bidding wars, and ultimately the tax burden that many of us will undoubtedly be asked (read: forced) to bear will not be light by any stretch of the imagination. But I honestly believe that beyond all the trials and tribulations caused by this international spectacle will be forgotten once that fortnight begins in late summer of 2016.
I love my city, it’s a world-class city, and I believe that it will embrace the international spotlight and shine brighter than it ever has. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel that Chicago has anything to prove, but I want to see Chicago on the world’s biggest stage for all to see the amazing city that I am proud to call home!
Let’s bring the Games back! 2016: BACK THE BID!
